A multi-level, indoor-outdoor interactive installation of structures and environments opening in June of 2010 at the Meow Wolf space on Second and Hopewell. Over 25 artists created an imagined shantytown of living spaces and curious interiors, constructed from a variety of found and donated materials. Featuring structures made from scrap wood, Styrofoam, mud, abandoned couches, telephone book pages and fabric samples (to name a few), and including sound and video elements, Habitats provided an all-terrain experience of exploration, inviting viewers to climb, crawl, wander and spend time in each space to fully engage the total work. Habitats marked a major step forward for Meow Wolf as far as collective organization and planning, shaping a framework for many artists to collaborate on a cohesive art piece while retaining individual creative goals and visions.
