The Art of B Corp

Meow Wolf’s B Corp recertification fuels purpose and possibility.

Meow Wolf has often been described as, well, indescribable. We are not quite a museum nor a theme park, and certainly not an art gallery. So what are we, exactly? Part of our ethos is inviting our visitors to decide for themselves as they explore our immersive worlds. We’ve always believed the most powerful ideas bloom in the spaces between the lines.

Though we thrive in the possibilities of the unknown, a few certainties have grounded us from the beginning: a commitment to operating differently - guided by people, grounded in care for the planet, and driven by purpose. This led us to become the first certified B Corporation in the themed entertainment industry. This status, recognized as the highest standard for social corporate responsibility, is one we have proudly maintained through years of change and evolution.

We are thrilled to announce on September 1, we successfully recertified as a B Corporation. This milestone is a celebration of all the Meow Wolf Shrimp (our incredible employees) who bring our values to life every day. From the Shrimp who greet guests at the doors of our exhibitions and guide them through new realms, to the artists, technicians, and engineers behind the scenes, this achievement is only possible because of the dedication of our people.

Rebecca Campbell, Meow Wolf’s Interim Chief Executive Officer, says, Meow Wolf’s recertification is a testament to our commitment to operating in a way that is responsible to our people, planet, and the communities we call home. The years since our last recertification have been marked by significant growth. I am proud that through it all, we continue to adhere to our most deeply held values.

B Corporations are required to undergo recertification every three years. The process is comprehensive and requires in-depth examinations of five areas - community, environment, governance, workers, and customers. Below, we explore what this looks like for our business through the lens we know best; the creative process.

Building a Blueprint for Good Governance

We know, we know – governance isn’t exactly the most thrilling topic. But just like our largescale art installations can’t exist without a solid blueprint, a mission-driven company can’t succeed without a strong governance foundation. B Corp requires that businesses ensure their values are “locked” and will endure as long as the company is in operation. Meow Wolf has built our values into the very core of our business by organizing as a Public Benefit Corporation. Unlike B Corp certification, which is provided by the nonprofit entity B Lab, being a Public Benefit Corporation codifies our commitment to business for good into our organizational documents - ensuring that our most foundational values continue to guide us in perpetuity.

Painting a Greener Future
A collection of colorful found objects put together into one amorphous collection.

The natural world is one of the most important inspirations for our artists. We have always considered ourselves environmentally conscious, although in our early days of dumpster-diving, this was out of necessity as much as passion. Now that we (mostly) stay out of the trash, our green journey has evolved into a sophisticated process that follows the cycle of creation. Before any Meow Wolf artist so much as picks up a paintbrush to begin a new project, we implement a plan to ensure minimal environmental impact. This commitment extends to our day-to-day operations where we continually identify areas for improvement in environmental sustainability, like the shift from plastic water bottles to more eco-conscious aluminum cans in our cafes.

“As a member of Meow Wolf’s Sustainability Council, I work with passionate employees across the company to oversee environmental strategy, set reduction targets, and ensure alignment with larger company values. My role as Project Director means I am able to see firsthand how we have successfully integrated sustainability into our operations.”
- Derek Pendergrass, Vice President, Design and Integration

Crafting Community Engagement

Every Meow Wolf creation is deeply rooted in place. From our hometown of Santa Fe to our newest community of Houston, we center local voices and experiences at the heart of every exhibition. Our dedication to accessible art means we give out thousands of free community tickets each year and have granted millions of dollars in donations and sponsorships to local arts nonprofits since our inception. In 2023, we fulfilled a longtime ambition by launching the Meow Wolf Foundation, which distributed over $600,000 in funding during its inaugural grant cycle in support of organizations dedicated to arts and culture programs across Meow Wolf’s communities.

“The Meow Wolf Foundation works alongside the company as a mission-driven entity, using art and imagination to build community, encourage equitable access to creativity, and impact change.”
- Gabriela Gómez, Senior Director Meow Wolf Foundation

Designing Supportive Employee Experiences

Our people are at the heart of everything we do. Meow Wolf is dedicated to creating a supportive environment that allows our employees to build and maintain world-class artistic experiences. We have now grown to over 900 employees across the country. We may no longer fit into a small office space (or even a single building), but we are still united in our belief that the work we do is transformative. We offer our Shrimp a suite of support structures, including comprehensive benefits packages, transgender-inclusive healthcare, matching donations and volunteering incentives, the ability to participate in VOICE (employee advocacy) chapters, and access to Meow Wolf Foundation’s SAVE Fund, which provides emergency funding to employees.

“After working with Meow Wolf for nearly seven years, I know that community has always been one of our most closely held values. Since the launch of VOICE, passionate, deeply involved employees have harnessed Meow Wolf’s signature creativity to maximize our impact as well as the goals of VOICE’s affinity groups. For example, the VOICE Las Vegas chapter’s Echoes of Excellence committee has organized public events for Black History Month and Juneteenth, providing local artists a platform to share their work with a broader audience. We also have Rainbow Shrimps support activities during Las Vegas Pride.”
- Jay Johnson, VOICE Las Vegas Co-Chair

Inspiring our Visitors

The core of our work is the desire to create unique, inspirational experiences that fuel creativity in everyone that visits. We pride ourselves on the quality, craft, and care that goes into every Meow Wolf offering, from our permanent exhibitions to our gift shop products. While we believe wholeheartedly in the value of our work, it is ultimately our customers who determine if the Meow Wolf experience lives up to its promise. In recent years, we have developed world-class safety measures and customer feedback loops to ensure we continually deliver more outstanding and unexpected ways for everyone to engage with art. We also continued our journey to make our exhibitions more accessible by instituting new offerings such as Aira visual interpreting services and certifying all our locations as IBCCES Autism Centers

Much like the creative process, our B Corp journey is ongoing. Each new portal deepens our impact and brings us closer to our vision of making a lasting difference in the world through art and storytelling. Growth also means harder questions about resources, responsibility, and the planet we share. We don’t claim to have every answer, but we are committed to facing those realities with transparency and resolve. That commitment will guide us as we work to keep Meow Wolf equitable, sustainable, and innovative in the years ahead.
