Day of the Devs: Indie Game Heaven

Over 70 unreleased, independently-produced video games to be featured at the 7th annual event. || Free, All ages

It's November...aka full-on fall!

You know what that means: the leaves are changing and beginning to crisp and scatter, yielding a satisfying crunch underfoot. It also means it's time for Day of the Devs, a once-a-year showcase of over 70 mind-blowing indie games and game developers put on by our friends at DoubleFine and iam8bit. The 7th annual Day of the Devs will take place at the Midway, this Sunday Nov. 10 in San Francisco.

At Meow Wolf, we love indie games. They’re fun, personal — you know we love our DIY art — and serve as portals to worlds beyond our wildest dreams. This is why we're so excited to sponsor Day of the Devs! With that in mind, here are some of the event’s featured games we're looking forward to exploring!

Frog Detective 2: The Case of the Invisible Wizard - Grace Bruxner and Thomas Bowker

Australian dev Grace Bruxner is one of our favorites. In the follow up to The Haunted Island, a Frog Detectivegame, the titular Frog Detective investigates as a town’s welcoming celebration for a mysterious Invisible Wizard has been ripped to shreds by an unknown culprit. The Detective must find out “whodunnit!”

Combined, Bruxner’s signature art style and dry humor results in a game that is good-hearted, laugh-out-loud funny, and totally unique.

Consume Me - Jenny Jiao Hsia and AP Thomson

One of the many reasons we love games is that they can tell powerful, personal, and funny stories. Jenny Jiao Hsia and AP Thomson's Consume Me is a darkly humorous, personal game about the developer's relationship with food. Describing the project, Jenny Jiao Hsia writes:

“The project started out as a collection of prototypes which drew from my past experiences with dieting and disordered eating. By making you feel obsessed with calories, forcing you to look at food strangely and mechanically and fret over losing weight, Consume Me puts the player directly into the mind of the dieter.

"The game explores a three-way dynamic between the player, the character in the game, and the fact that this character is based on me, the author….What does it mean to push and prod the character into certain eating behaviors when the player doesn’t get full control of the character’s thoughts and internal state? The player is put in the awkward position of performing as the character, but only in a limited sense.”

Tie Your Laces - We Throw Switches

We’re really excited about ALT-CTRL games, or games that use imaginative controllers and inputs. This year’s Day of the Devs will feature an array of ALT-CTRL games, including Tie Your Laces, the newest game from Scottish collective We Throw Switches.

We Throw Switches - Tie Your Laces
Designed to be enjoyed by players and spectators alike, Tie Your Laces is a tribute to court sports, with an LED twist.

In addition to these killer games, Day of the Devs will feature work from Girls Make Games and Gameheads, two extraordinary organizations that bring game development training and mentorship resources to Bay Area youth.

We are psyched about the broad range of characters, stories, and worlds that games bring to life, and we are proud to do our part in supporting game development communities that are inclusive, imaginative and fun!

Day of the Devs takes place on Sunday, November 10 at the Midway in San Francisco.
